South Lyon vs. Divine Child 06/01/10

South Lyon traveled to DCC for a first ever meeting between the two teams in girls soccer.  South Lyon would take the lead twice, but it would be Divine Child who would score last and a 4-2 win. 
 
South Lyon came out strong and battled hard for their first goal when Freshman Rebecca Pavlock sent a free kick into the net from 40 yards out.  Divine Child tied the game just before the end of the first half to make it 1-1. 
 
The second half started the same way as the first with South Lyon carrying play towards the DC goal.  They were rewarded when Freshman Andrea Pesch and Freshman Courtney Horaney combined to find Junior Kara Sullivan who scored to give the Lions the lead again at 2-1.  Divine Child turned the tide at that point scoring just a few minutes later to tie the game up at 2-2.  They then scored with 12 minutes remaining to go up 3-2.  The Lions tried desperately to get the game tied up again, but gave up a goal with 18 seconds left when everyone including the keeper was pushed up trying to score.  South Lyon finishes the season at 8-10-3. 
 
"It was a tough game in difficult conditions," commented South Lyon coach Tracee Senter.  "We played on a field that had not been cut in at least a week.  You could not even see the girls shoes when they were on the field and the ball would not move.  We battled hard, but we were definitely not used to playing on such a poorly maintained surface and it cost us."

 

South Lyon vs.Lakeland 05/26/10

 South Lyon traveled to Lakeland for a KLAA crossover and a rematch of two teams that played the season opener.  After a 1-1 draw in the first half, South Lyon would outscore Lakeland 3-1 in the second half for a 4-2 victory.
 
South Lyon came out strong and put pressure on the Eagles right away.  In the 6th minute of the game, Shellee Merryman and Andrea Pesch combined to find Courtney Horaney who scored to make it 1-0 Lions.  After that, both teams settled in and battled hard through the midfield and with 6 minutes left in the half Lakeland was rewarded with a goal to tie the game up at 1-1.
 
The second half saw the Lions get right back on the board with two goals in the first 6 minutes.  Merryman, Pesch, and Horaney again combined for another Lions goal and a 2-1 lead.  Courntey Harrison would make it 3-1 when she converted on a penalty kick.  Lakeland would cut the lead to 1 when they scored three minutes later.  The Lions then put the game out of reach when Lindsay Cocklin assisted a Lauren Dobransky goal to make it 4-2. 
 
The Lions finish the regular season at 3-7-2 in the KLAA and 8-9-3 overall.  They travel to Dearborn Divine Child at 4:30 on June 1st to open the state playoffs. 
 

South Lyon vs. Wayne Memorial 05/24/10

South Lyon traveled to Wayne for a KLAA crossover match and had 8 different scorers in route to a 9-1 victory. 
 
The South Lyon goal scorers were Andrea Pesch with 2, Lauren Dobransky, Courtney Harrison, Kara Sullivan, Celina Pollard, Rebecca Pavlock and Rachel Hay.  South Lyon is now 2-7-2 in the KLAA and 7-9-3 overall.  Pesch becomes the all time single season point getter with 21 points so far this season (record set last year by Megan Morad 20). 
 

South Lyon vs. Northville 5/20/10

The 2nd ranked unbeaten Northville Mustangs came into the Jungle and found themselves down 1-0 at halftime, but rallied two late goals in the game to beat South Lyon 2-1. 
 
South Lyon came out hard and matched Northville's possession game with hard work and determination.  Twelve minutes into the first half the Lions were rewarded when Senior Kortney Koenig intercepted a pass and shot the ball pass the keeper for a 1-0 Lions lead.  Northville put tons of pressure on the Lions defense, but they were up to the task and the halftime score remained 1-0 South Lyon.
 
The second half continued with Northville mounting massive pressure and in the 58th minute Northville tied the game up at 1-1.  It continued and Northville scored the game winner in the 71st minute of the match for the 2-1 win.  South Lyon Freshman keeper Courtney Horaney made 12 saves in net for the Lions. 
 
"We continue to get stronger and better as the year goes on," commented South Lyon Varsity Coach Tracee Senter.  "We are starting to peak at the right time and intend to take our strong play into the crossovers and districts in the next two weeks."
 
South Lyon is 6-9-3 on the season and 1-7-2 in the KLAA Central. 
 

South Lyon vs.South Lyon East 5/17/10

The battle of South Lyon continued on the soccer pitch tonight with the Lions scoring two second half goals for a 2-0 win.
 
The first half saw the Lions dominate possession and out shooting the Cougars 17-0.  But the Cougars keeper was up to the task making every save and keeping them in the game and a 0-0 halftime score.  The second half went the same way, but 10 minutes in Freshman Andrea Pesch and Courtney Horaney combined passes and found Junior Colleen Sullivan who fired a shot in the right side netting for a 1-0 Lions lead.  Then with 43 seconds left in the game, Pesch crossed the ball to Horaney who got the insurance goal and the 2-0 Lions win.  Sophmore Caitlyn Kort was in goal for the shutout (4th of the season).  South Lyon moves to 6-8-3 on the season and 1-6-2 in the KLAA Central. 
 

South Lyon vs. Stevenson 5/14/10

South Lyon traveled to Livonia Stevenson to play yet another KLAA Central power and match them goal for goal in the first half, but gave up a goal with 19 seconds left in a 2-1 loss.
 
Stevenson came out strong and got a goal from their senior captain Kayla Kimble in the 7th minute of the game.  South Lyon tied the game up in the 20th minute when Sophmore Celina Pollard found Freshman Andrea Pesch who tied the game up at 1.  After chances for both teams and physical play in the midfield the score stayed the same until the last minute of play when Stevenson scored off a corner kick with 19 seconds left in the game. 
 
South Lyon is now 5-7-3 overall and 0-5-2 in the KLAA Central.  They play Novi on Saturday and South Lyon East at home on Monday. 
 

South Lyon vs. Salem 05/06/10

The 8th ranked Salem Rocks traveled to the Jungle and had to score a goal late in the game to earn a 1-1 tie against the Lions. 
 
South Lyon came out strong in the first half and hit the post twice, but could not convert and the half ended scoreless.  The second half the Lions were able to convert halfway through when Freshman Andrea Pesch assisted a goal to Senior Kortney Koenig for a 1-0 lead.  It took Salem all the way to the last 3 minutes before they were able to tie the score off a corner kick.  Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Horaney made her first start in goal and made 7 saves on the night.  South Lyon is now 5-6-3 overall and 0-4-2 in the KLAA Central.  They play #5 Novi on Tuesday at Novi.
 

South Lyon vs.Northville 05/03/2010

The Lions traveled to Northville on a rainy Monday night to take on the 3rd ranked team in the state.  The Lions held tough in the first half keeping the Mustangs off the board and a 0-0 tie.
 
The score would remain zeros until 52 minutes in when Northville finally cracked the Lions defense for a 1-0 lead.  The Lions held tough for another 20 minutes then ran out of steam giving up 3 goals in the final 10 minutes.  Lions Sophmore goalkeeper Caitlyn Kort made 11 saves on the night. 
 
"We played some of the best defense of the year", commented Varsity Coach Tracee Senter.  "If we can keep up that intensity going forward and keep getting stronger physically, we can achieve more."
 
The Lions are now 5-6-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the KLAA Central.
 
 

South Lyon vs. South Lyon East 04/29/10

The Lions and the Cougars played their first of two league matches tonight at SLE and fought to a 2-2 tie.
 
The Cougars got on the board first when Sophmore forward Katie Walker carried the ball down the left side and slotted the ball in the right side netting for a 1-0 lead.  The Lions scored less then two minutes later when freshman Rachel Hay found freshman Andrea Pesch who scored to make it 1-1.  The Lions put a lot of pressure the rest of the half but it ended 1-1. 
 
East scored early in the second half to go up 2-1.  The Lions continued to pressure getting 20 shots on the Cougars net, but did not score until Pesch put the ball in the net with 3 minutes left in the game.  Cougars keeper Sam Walker made 18 saves in the match. 
 
South Lyon is now 0-3-1 in the KLAA Central and 5-5-1 overall and face Northville on Monday.  South Lyon East is also 0-3-1 in the KLAA Central and 2-5-2 overall and face Livonia Stevenson on Tuesday. 
 
The rematch between these two teams will be Monday, May 17th in the Jungle.  Kickoff is at 6pm. 
 

South Lyon vs. Stevenson 04/26/2010

Livonia Stevenson traveled to the Jungle to take on South Lyon in a KLAA Central soccer matchup.  Livonia scored once in the first and twice late in the second for a 3-0 win.  Sophmore goalkeeper Caitlyn Kort made 13 saves to keep the game close for the Lions who are now 5-5-1 overall and 0-3 in the KLAA Central.  South Lyon plays South Lyon East at 6pm this Thursday at South Lyon East. 
 

South Lyon vs. Novi 04/22/10

The South Lyon girls soccer team hosted the 10th ranked division 1 Novi Wildcats on Thursday and gave up 3 goals in the first half on way to a 4-0 defeat. 
 
Novi scored 3 goals in the first 17 minutes of play to open up the game.  After that, both teams settled in and battled back and forth.  Novi scored their 4th goal with 52 seconds left to win 4-0.  South Lyon is now 5-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the KLAA Central. 
 

South Lyon vs. Salem 04/20/10

The South Lyon girls soccer team traveled to the Salem to take on the 9th ranked Rocks on Tuesday and battled to a 2-1 score at halftime, only to succumb to a 7-2 defeat in the end.
 
Salem jumped out to an early lead 4 minutes into the match, but South Lyon equalized when Courtney Harrison scored on a free kick from 20 yards out.  Salem scored a little later in the half to make it 2-1 at halftime.
 
Salem came out firing in the second scoring two goals early in the half.  South Lyon cut the lead in half again, when Kortney Koenig found Andrea Pesch who scored to make it 4-2.  It was all Salem from there as they went on to score 3 more goals for a 7-2 final.  South Lyon is now 5-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the KLAA Central. 
 

Montrose Tourney 04/17/2010

 
MONTROSE TOURNEY CHAMPIONS!!
The South Lyon Girls Soccer team traveled to Montrose for an all day tournament, keeping their opponets off the scoreboard for 180 minutes while bringing home 1st place. 
 
The first game South Lyon faced Croswell-Lexington and came away with a 5-0 win.  Andrea Pesch scored two goals and Kortney Koenig, Lindsay Cocklin, and Celina Pollard each had one.
 
The second game was also a 5-0 win for the Lions against Assumption College, a physical team from Ontario Canada.  Pesch and Pollard each had two goals with Courtney Horaney scoring one.
 
The two wins put South Lyon into the championship game against the host school Montrose.  This was the third year of the tournament with South Lyon winning it in 2008 and Montrose in 2009.  South Lyon was determined to win it again an proved their point scored 50 seconds into the game when Lauren Dobransky sloted the ball to Pesch for the 1-0 lead.  Pesch scored her second of the game and 6th of the tournament later in the half to give the Lions the 2-0 lead.
 
The second half saw Montrose pick up their game to try and get back in it, but South Lyon goalkeeper Caitlyn Kort made 7 saves for her third shutout of the day, including a diving save to her left with 6 minutes remaining in the match.  South Lyon's victory in the tournament secured them 4 players on the all tournament team, including the MVP. 
 
The South Lyon players on the tournament team included goalkeeper Caitlyn Kort, defender Jenna Virant, and forward Lauren Dobransky.  With her 6 goals and an assist on the day, Andrea Pesch took home MVP honors. 
 
South Lyon is now 5-2-1 on the season and open league play at home on Tuesday against Salem.
 

South Lyon vs. Howell 04/13/10

The South Lyon girls soccer team scored 2 goals in each half against Howell on Tuesday night in route to a 4-2 victory over the Highlanders.  South Lyon Senior Lauren Dobransky scored in the first 10 minutes of the game to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.  Howell came roaring back with a goal of their own 8 minutes later.  Then Junior Kara Sullivan scored her first goal of the season just before half to give the Lions a 2-1 halftime lead.
 
South Lyon made it 3-1 early in the second half as Freshman Andrea Pesch got her second assist of the game when she found Freshman Courtney Horaney who scored her team leading 4th goal of the season.  Howell pushed hard and scored with 10 minutes remaining in the game to make it 3-2.  Senior Captain Kortney Koenig then scored with just 4 minutes left to ice the game when she ripped a shot in the upper corner of the goal to make the final score 4-2 in favor of the Lions.  South Lyon's Sophmore goalkeeper Caitlyn Kort made 14 saves in net to secure the win.  South Lyon is 2-2-1 on the season and travels to Montrose for an all day tournament this Saturday.

South Lyon JV defeated Howell JV 3-1 with its team's best offensive output this season.  Celina Pollard, Chelsea Hughes, and Sydney Angove each scored for the Lions.

South Lyon vs. Pinckney 03/30/10
 
Varsity 
South Lyon traveled to Pinckey to revive and old KVC rivalry.  Pinckney would score 2 goals in each half to walk away with a 4-2 win over the Lions.
 
Pinckney came right out and pressured the Lions early but were unable to crack through the defense.  They finally did with 10 minutes remaining in the half.  They scored a second one with only 2 minutes remaining. 
 
The second half was much like the first with Pinckney threatening most of the half.  Then halfway through the second stanza, Pinckney scored again to make it 3-0.  The Lions then came to life.  With 15 minutes left in the game, Junior Courtney Harrison crossed the ball to freshman Courtney Horaney who sloted the ball in the right side of the goal to make it 3-1.  Then with 5 minutes left freshmen Rachel Hay and Andrea Pesch combined to assist to Harrison to make it 3-2.  The Lions attacked heavily on the Pirate goal, but as they pushed up for an all out attack, Pinckney capitalized with 2 minutes left to make it a 4-2 final.
 
"We learned a lot tonight and we will carry this knowledge into our league play", commented South Lyon Varsity Coach Tracee Senter.  "We are getting better every game and we will need to continue to do so".
 
South Lyon is now 1-2-1 on the season and will play again after spring break on Tuesday, April 13th at Howell.  Then on Saturday, April 17th to Montrose for a 6 team tournament.
 
 
JV
South Lyon JV soccer played  a tough Pickney JV team, but came up short 2-1.  Pinckney scored 2 early in the first half, but South Lyon's Celina Pollard scored on a nice breakaway goal before half to make it 2-1.  South Lyon's defense stayed strong the rest of the game, but they were unable to tie the game up.  South Lyon JV is now 1-3 on the season.


 
South Lyon vs. Hartland 03/29/10

Hartland traveled to South Lyon to open their soccer season, and scored 3 first half goals to win 3-0 over the Lions.
 
South Lyon matched Hartland shot for shot early, but Hartland's talented forwards were able to find the net 3 times to take the lead 3-0 at half.  South Lyon's defense shored up for the rest of the game, but the offense was unable to muster any goals in the game.  South Lyon sophmore goalkeeper Caitlyn Kort did make 11 saves on the night.  South Lyon is now 1-1-1 on the season and they travel to Pinckney tomorrow night.

South Lyon vs. Fenton 03/26/10

South Lyon traveled north to Fenton on a cold Friday evening and scored with just over a minute left in the game to come away with a 1-1 tie.  
 
Fenton scored in the 2nd minute of the game off a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.  After pressuring the Lions defense for the rest of the first half that is all they could muster and the score remained 1-0 Fenton at the half. 
 
The second half saw the Lions change momentum as they had some attacks on Fenton's goal and seem to gain momentum.  Fenton's star senior forward Tori Baily (signed by University of Tenessee) had several cracks at the Lions goal, but sophmore keeper Caitlyn Kort made two stellar diving saves to keep the score 1-0.  As the clock wound down the freshman Mckenna Nuttal and freshman Andrea Pesch combined passes and found freshman Courtney Horaney who scored her 2nd goal of the season to tie the game up at 1-1.  That was the final and South Lyon is now 1-0-1 on the season. 
 
"This was a good test for our young team," commented Lions Coach Tracee Senter.  "Fenton finished ranked 3rd in the state last year in division 2 and is a top team again this year.  Now we know we can play with anyone in this division.  If we keep improving, the sky is the limit."

The JV game was as close as the Varsity as Fenton scored a late goal to win the match 1-0 over South Lyon.   
South Lyon vs. Lakeland  3/24/10
 
Varsity 
The Lakeland Eagles came into the Jungle on opening night of the girls high school soccer season only to see South Lyon score with 9 minutes remaining to win 3-2. 
 
Lakeland scored first 15 minutes into the game, but South Lyon tied it up 3 minutes later when freshman Courtney Horaney scored her first varsity goal (assisted by senior Captain Kortney Koenig).  With three minutes left in the half South Lyon freshman Andrea Pesch scored her first varsity goal with an assist to junior Colleen Sullivan to make it 2-1 Lions at halftime.
 
The second half was a back and forth battle and with 12 minutes left in the game Lakeland found the back of the net to tie the game.  Three minutes later, Sullivan notched her second assist of the game when she passed the ball to senior Lauren Dobransky who scored the game winner.  The 3-2 win for South Lyon makes them 1-0 on the season.  South Lyon travels to Fenton on Friday.  Next week they host Hartland on Monday and travel to Pinckney on Tuesday. 
 
JV
South Lyon JV girls soccer defeated Lakeland 2-0 on Wednesday night.  Sopmore Celina Pollard scored a goal in each half and Sophmore keeper Katie Stiefel made several saves to earn the shutout.  South Lyon JV is now 1-0 on the season.
